McKelvie attended United States Military Academy where he played with the Army Black Knights in the NCAA's Division I Atlantic Hockey conference. On July 13, 2009, following his graduation from West Point, McKelvie was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins to a one year contract, however he was unavailable to play hockey during 2009-10 season because his enrollment at West Point required him to fulfill U.S. Military service requirements,[1] and on July 1, 2010 he was re-signed by the Bruins.[2] Despite his prospect for a successful professional hockey career, the U.S. Military has required McKelvie to complete a second year of active military duty before he will be allowed to join the Bruins organization.[3]
On July 14, 2011, McKelvie signed a one-year contract with the Boston Bruins.[4]
